Hugh William Sparks was born on April 28, 1870 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the son of William and Catherine (Barnes) Sparks. Hugh's father was a Civil War veteran.
Hugh was an only child. When he was a young boy, his family moved to Portage, Cambria County. He grew up in Portage near his grandparents Tobias and Elizabeth Barnes, and his mother's two sisters, Joanna and Barbara and their families.

William Henry Troxell (1880 - 1961)
William Henry Troxell was born on July 22, 1880 in Portage, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the son of John A. and Barbara E. (Barnes) Troxell.
William and his two sisters grew up in Portage where their father was postmaster. On July 12, 1893 their mother died. She was just 36 years of age.

Barbara E. (Barnes) (1857 - 1893)
Samuel was the second youngest of six children. When he was a young boy his parents left their farm in Paint Township and moved to St. Clair Township, Bedford County. His older brother Hiram, 19 years his senior, remained on the farm.
