James Anthony Conrad (1859 - 1892)
James Anthony Conrad was born on February 11, 1859 near Wilmore in Summerhill Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the son of Henry and Mary “Polly” (Settlemyer) Conrad. He was baptized on March 25, 1859 at St. Bartholomews’s Catholic Church in Wilmore.
James grew up on a farm. James's father fought in the Civil War in 1864-5. Soon after he returned from the War, the Conrad family relocated near Ashville in Clearfield Township, where his father operated a sawmill near Conrad's Dam.
On May 22, 1883 James married Mary Almira Sutton in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County. Mary was born on October 1, 1858 in Carrolltown, Cambria County, the daughter of William and Nancy Ann (Becker) Sutton. Mary was a cousin of Mary (Sutton) Conrad, wife of James's brother Harry.
James and Mary had the following four children: James Harvey Conrad, Hazel Isabelle (Conrad) Cupples, Henry Oscar Conrad, and William Edward/Edgar "Eddy" Conrad.
On October 20, 1899, Mary gave birth to twin sons, Oscar and Eddy. Sadly Oscar died in infancy.
Mary died in 1891 at the age of about 32. Tragically, James died less than one year later on April 9, 1892 at their home in Ashville. His three minor children were orphaned at age 8, 5, and 2. James's brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Mary Conrad, raised their daughter Hazel. His brother and sister-in-law, Lewis and Maggie Conrad, adopted his son Eddy. Maggie and Mary were both cousins to Mary Almira.
It is not known who his son James went to live with. Sadly, James died in 1903 at the age of 19.
James and Mary Almira are buried at St. John's Cemetery, Altoona, Blair County, PA.
