Thomas Conrad (1861 - 1936)
Thomas Conrad was born on January 19, 1861 near Wilmore in Summerhill Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the son of Henry and Mary “Polly” (Settlemyer) Conrad. He was baptized at St. Bartholomews’s Catholic Church in Wilmore.
Thomas's father fought in the Civil War from 1864-5. Soon after he returned from the War, the Conrad family relocated near Ashville in Clearfield Township, where his father operated a sawmill by Conrad's Dam.
On June 26, 1888 Thomas married Annie Clara Trexler in St. Augustine Catholic Church, St. Augustine. Annie was born about 1862, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Trexler. Sadly, Annie died the following year, perhaps during an unsuccessful childbirth.
Thomas remained a widow for almost ten years. On February 23, 1897 he married Sarah Jane Grove in Ebensburg, Cambria County. Sarah Jane was born in December 1873 in Cambria County, the daughter of John J. and Martha Ann (Mause) Grove. Thomas was 36 years old and Sarah was 23.
Thomas and Sarah had the following ten children: Esther Margaret (Conrad) Lynch, Amanda Mary (Conrad) Wills, ida G. (Conrad) Rife, Martha M. "Mattie" (Conrad) Lunghofer, Elmer C. Conrad, Pius John Conrad, Lena (Conrad) Risbon, Oscar Joseph Conrad, Pauline Josephine (Conrad) Settlemyer, and Rose Anna (Conrad) Strayer.
Thomas and Sarah raised their large family on a farm near Ashville.

On May 25, 1936 Thomas died at their home at the age of 75. Sarah died on May 13, 1947 at the age of 73.
Thomas and Sarah are buried in St. Thomas Cemetery, Ashville.
