Ellen Matilda "Ella" (Conrad) Hart (1863 - 1904)



Ellen Matilda Conrad was born on April, 29, 1863 near Wilmore in Summerhill Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Henry and Mary “Polly” (Settlemyer) Conrad. She was baptized at St. Bartholomews’s Catholic Church in Wilmore where she was christened "Anna Matilda." However, she went by the names "Ellen" and "Ella."

When Ella was a baby, her father enlisted to fight in the Civil War. Soon after he returned from the War, the Conrad family moved near Ashville in Clearfield Township, where her father operated a sawmill by Conrad's Dam. Ella grew up on a farm near Ashville.

On October 4, 1887 Ella married John Hart in St. Augustine Catholic Church, St. Augustine. John was born about 1864 in Cambria County.

Ella and John had two children. They were: William Matz Hart, and Martha A. Hart.

Ella and John moved to Sankertown, Cresson Township, Cambria County, where they resided.

On July 25, 1904 Ella died at their home.  She was 41. Ella is buried near her parents in St. Thomas Cemetery, Ashville, Cambria County, PA

With two young children needing a mother, John remarried two years later on October 3, 1906 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Cresson. His second wife was named Mary Johnson, and she was born around 1869. John and Mary had two children: Mary (Hart) Lafferty and Charles Hart.

John was living in Sankertown in 1930. His whereabouts thereafter are unnkown.

William Matz Hart married Susan Jane McGuire and had seven children. Martha's fate is unknown.
