He was baptized on July 27, 1866 at St. Bartholomews’s Catholic Church in Wilmore. When he was a baby, his family relocated near Ashville in Clearfield Township, where his father operated a sawmill near Conrad's Dam. Lewis grew up on a farm.
On Mar 1, 1892 Lewis married Margaret Magdeline "Maggie" Sutton at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Summit, Cresson Township, Cambria County. In April 1892 Lewis's recently widowed brother, James, died. Lewis and Maggie raised his nephew Edgar. His brother Harry raised Edgar's sister Hazel. it is not known who raised their brother Henry, nor is it known why he died in 1903 at the young age of 19.
Lewis and Maggie were the parents of ten children: Alline Agnes (Conrad) Brawley, Edna Mary (Conrad) Donahue, Annie Elizabeth Conrad, Annetta Catherine (Conrad) Allen, Alberta Margaret "Bert" (Conrad) Richards, Francis Gallitzin Conrad, Henry Bartholomew "Bartley" Conrad, Mary Josephine (Conrad) Davies, Cyril Joseph Conrad, and Lewis Martin Conrad.
Thomas was a farmer, and their raised their children on a farm near Ashville.
Tragedy struck in 1898 when their daughter Lizzie fell into a spring near their home and drowned. She was two years old. Of their remaining nine children, five girls and four boys, only four married, all girls. None of their sons married, and so none carried on the Conrad name.
Maggie died at home on March 31, 1936. She was 70. Her death ended a marriage of 44 years. Lew died on March 3, 1938. He was 71.
Maggie and Lewis are buried in St. Thomas Cemetery, Ashville.
