Laura Mary (Conrad) Wharton (1870 - 1941)
Laura Mary Conrad was born on November 5, 1870 near Chest Springs in Clearfield Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of John William and Ellen Katherine (McMullen) Conrad.
Laura grew up on her parent's farm in Clearfield Township, the oldest of ten children.
On November 13, 1888 Laura married James Thomas Wharton at St. Augustine Catholic Church in St. Augustine, Clearfield Township. James was born on June 3, 1868, the son of John and Elizabeth (Litzinger) Wharton.
Laura and James were the parents of five children: Denver Wharton, Myrtle (Wharton) Link, Blase J. Wharton, Clair James Wharton, and Ethel M. Wharton.
Ethel, the youngest, died on March 8, 1905 at the age of 1.
In 1894 James found employment with the Pennsylvania Railroad and was promoted to conductor in 1900. In 1906 James and Laura moved to Cresson, Cambria County when James became the Yardmaster of the Cresson Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Their son Blase was a veteran of World War I, serving in France. Their son in law Irvin Link was also a veteran of World War I.
Their son Clair found employment in Cresson as a stenographer for the assistant superintendent of the Pittsburgh division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. As a young man, he contracted influenza during the epidemic of 1918-20. On February 22, 1921 he died at home at the age of 22. He was not married.
James died on June 22, 1929 at their home on Powell Avenue after a long illness. According to his obituary, the cause of death was arteriosclerosis. He was 61.
Laura died on September 10, 1941 at the home of her daughter. According to her obituary, she had been in "failing health for a number of months." She was 71.

Laura and James are buried in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Cresson.
