Orlando Patrick "Landy" Conrad (1875 - 1939)

Orlando Patrick "Landy" Conrad was born on October 7, 1875 in Clearfield Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the son of John William and Ellen Katherine (McMullen) Conrad.

Orlando had a first cousin two years older who was also named Orlando. It is not known where the unusual name originated, but he was nicknamed "Landy." Landy grew up on his parent's farm in Clearfield Township, the third of ten children.

On November 17, 1896 Landy married Mary Elexena "Zena" (Krise) Conrad at St. Augustine Catholic Church, St. Augustine, Clearfield Township. Zena was born on February 17, 1877 in St. Augustine, the daughter of Thomas J. and Matilda "Tillie" (Trexler) Krise.

Landy and Zena were the parents of eight children: Helen V. (Conrad) Whyte, M. Hazel (Conrad) Tully, Mary Ellen (Conrad) Adams, Joseph Edward "Edison" Conrad, Matilda (Conrad) Berschneider, Vincent Conrad, Margaret Dolores  (Conrad) Mapstone, and  James Patrick Conrad.

In 1912, Landy conducted a lumber camp for the Cambria Steel Company at the old Goughnour farm at Woodvale Heights near Conemaugh.

In 1930 Landy and Zene resided on Oil Well Road near Wilmore in Summerhill Township where Landy was a farmer. He also operated the Willow Beach Park.

On January 25, 1939 Landy died at their home. He was 63.


Son James Patrick was employed as a steelworker when he enlisted with the US Navy during World War II. He was killed in while serving aboard the USS Indianapolis in July 1945.  The cruiser sank in the Pacific Ocean near Guam.



Zena, a Gold Star mother,  and widow, died on October 11, 1946. She was 69.


Landy and Zena are buried at. Bartholomew's Cemetery, Wilmore.
