Philomena (McMullen) Monahan (1853 - 1892)

Philomena McMullen was born on January 4, 1853 in Clearfield Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of James and Susan (McDermitt) McMullen. She was baptized on  January 9, 1853 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Carrolltown. Her sponsors were her aunt and uncle, Hugh McMullen and Anna McDermitt.

Philomena grew up on a farm in Clearfield Township, the eighth of eleven children.

About 1872 19-year-old Philomena married John Tobias Monahan in Cambria County. John was born on December 18, 1850 in Cambria County, the son of Thomas Hugh and Mary Ann (Settlemyer) Monahan.

Philomena and John were the parents of eleven children, seven of whome were named: Mary (Monahan) Yahner, Susan (Monahan), Sheehan, Joseph C. Monahan, Frances (Monahan) Redinger, Frank H. Monahan, Mary Olive (Monahan) Eckenrode, and Elmer Monahan.

Philomena and John resided near Ashville in Clearfield Township.

Philomena died during childbirth on April 28, 1892 at their home. She was just 39 years old.

John died on August 30, 1918 in White Township, Cambria County at the age of 67.

Philomena and John are buried at St. Thomas Cemetery in Ashville.
