Susan Elizabeth (McMullen) Burgoon (1855 - 1900)
Susan Elizabeth McMullen was born on August 3, 1855 in Clearfield Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of James and Susan (McDermitt) McMullen. On August 5th, she was baptized at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in St. Augustine, Clearfield Township. Her baptism sponsors were David and Mary Mills.
Susan grew up on a farm in Clearfield Township, the ninth of eleven children.
On July 17, 1874 Susan married John Alexancer Burgoon at St. Augustine Catholic Church, St. Augustine. John was born on December 29, 1851 near St. Augustine, Clearfield Township, the son of William M. and Julia Anna (Adams) Burgoon.
Susan and John were the parents of eleven children. They were: Alexander Harry, Mary Margaret (Burgoon) Gill, Jane Burgoon, Joseph James Burgoon, James Martin Burgoon, Isadore Burgoon, Bridget Azelia "Zella" (Burgoon) Spielvogel, Susan Ellen Burgoon, Margaret Mary (Burgoon) Sager, Bertha (Burgoon) Detwiler, and Julia Ann Burgoon.
Two of their children died in infancy, Susan in 1889 and Julia Ann in 1896.
About 1884 Susan's brother Joseph married her sister-in-law Anna Eva Burgoon. Joseph and Anna had eleven children, just like Susan and John.
On February 9, 1900 Susan died. She was 44. She is buried at St. Agustine Cemetery.
In 1905 John found employment in the construction department for Bell Telephone. He worked there for fifteen years.
John Alexander outlived Susan by 41 years. He died at the advanced age of 89 on February 11, 1941 at the home of his daughter in Altoona, Blair County, PA.
