Frederick Corle (1822 - 1893)
Sophia (Shull) Corle (1826 - 1890)
Frederick Corle was born in January 1822 in what is now Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvanina, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Bowser) Corle Sr. Fred grew up on a farm in Union Township, the sixth of seven children. Sophia Shull was born on July 5, 1826 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Jacob and Polly (Russell) Shull. She grew up on a farm in Union Township, the second of ten children.
About 1844 Fred and Sophia were married in Union Township. They resided in Union Township where Fred was a farmer, and they raised eight children. Many of his brothers and cousins remained in Union Township, and helped populate the new village of Pavia.
Sophia gave birth to ten children over a span of 24 years, seven of whom survived to adulthood. Their children were: Amos Corle, Susan (Corle) Imler, Jeremiah Corle, Solomon Corle, Lydia Corle, Emma (Corle) Gordon, Rachel (Corle) Griffith, Eliza Jane (Corle) Taylor, Joseph Lincoln Corle, and Mary C. Corle.
Jeremiah died in infancy in 1849. Lidia was born in 1852, and it is thought that she too died in infancy (or early childhood), for she does not appear in the 1860 US Census.
In 1849 Fred's brother Abraham, 31, married Sophia's sister, Rachel, aged 20.
When the Civil War started, quite a number of Fred's nephews and cousins enlisted in the Pennsylvania infantry, including his brother in law Isaac Shull and his 52 year old cousin Martin Corle. Tragically, Fred's brothers Jacob, Joseph, and Henry suffered the lost of two sons each. In addition, Fred's brother in law Isaac Shull also died.
On February 25, 1865, 43-year old Fred was drafted into Company F of the 99th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry. He was mustered out on July 1, 1865 upon the end of the war.
Sophia must have been quite surprised when in late 1868 she found herself expecting another child, for it had been six years since their last child was born. On July 7, 1869 Sophia gave birth at the age of 43. Sadly, the newborn infant, who they named Mary, died just three days later.
Amos never married and it is believed he lived all his life on his parents' farm.
Susan and Solomon married a brother and sister, Gideon and Mary Ellen "Molly" Imler.
Emma and Eliza Jane both married and raised families near their parents in Union Township. Rachel married and raised her family in neighboring West St. Clair Township.
Not all of their children remained in Bedford County. Solomon moved his family to Sussex County, Virginia after visiting his newly married daughter and her husband, who had taken been appointed as a new school teacher there. Joseph headed West, eventually settling in Los Angeles County, California.
Sophia died on March 3, 1890 at their home. She was 63.
On July 20, 1890 Fred applied for a Civil War pension (application # 879 144; file # 646 296). It is not known whether he in fact injured during the war of suffered deprivation or if he just needed the money that a government pension would provide.
Fred died on April 13, 1893 at the age of 71.
Fred and Sophia are buried in Pavia Cemetery, Pavia, Union Township.
