Barbara E. (Barnes) (1857 - 1893)

Barbara E. Barnes was born on May 5, 1857 in Paint Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Tobias and Elizabeth (Custer) Barnes.

Barbara was the youngest of six children. When Barbara was a young girl her parents left their farm in Paint Township, and moved to St. Clair Township, Bedford County. Her older brother Hiram, 19 years her senior, remained on the farm. When she was a young woman, she moved again with her parents to Portage, Cambria County.

About 1877 Barbara married John A. Troxell, presumably in Cambria County. John was born about April 10, 1847 in Allegheny Township, Cambria County. He was ten years older than Barbara and a Civil War veteran. He had served with Company A, 55th Regiment of the  Pennsylvania Volunteers.

Barbara and John were the parents of three children: Elizabeth "Virginia" Troxell, William Henry Troxell, and Emma Marsden (Troxell) Thomas.

Barbara and John resided in Portage where he was employed as the postmaster at Coal Town in Portage.

Barbara died on July 12, 1893 at the young age of 36. Her cause of death is not known.

Their daughter Virginia died in 1899 at the very young age of about 22.

Their son William married Emma Dolly Flynn and had two daughters, Hazel (Troxell) Jones and Ruth Troxell. He was a lifelong Portage resident and a charter member of the Portage Volunteer Fire Company.

Their daughter Emma Marsden married Thomas C. Thomas.

John outlived Barbara by 30 years. He died in Portage on February 20, 1922 at the age of 74.

He was a member of the United Brethren Church, but Barbara's obituary stated that she was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Barbara and John are buried at Wilmore United Brethren Cemetery, Summerhill Township, Cambria County, PA, near their son Hugh and daughter Virginia.
