Hiram Barnes (1837 - 1900)

Hiram Barnes was born on June 11, 1838 (or July 22, 1838) in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, the son of Tobias and Elizabeth (Custer) Barnes.

Hiram grew up on a farm in Paint Township, Somerset County, the oldest of six children.

For a time young Hiram resided with his grandmother, Catherine Custer, on her farm in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County.

in early 1860 Hiram resided with his parents and five siblings on their farm in Paint Township. Later that year or in 1861, Hiram married Rebecca Seese presumably in Paint Township. Rebecca was born about March 26, 1838 in Paint Township, the daughter of Melchior and Elizabeth (Helman) Seese. Elizabeth was the youngest of about ten children.

Hiram and Rebecca were the parents of ten children: Abraham Barnes, William Barnes, Elizabeth (Barnes) Shaffer, Daniel Barnes, Sarah Ann Barnes, Jessa Barnes, Catherine (Barnes) Berkey, Susannah (Barnes) Maloney, Jeremiah Barnes, and Simon Peter Barnes.

Sometime in the 1860s Hiram's parents removed to Bedford County, and Hiram remained on the Barnes homestead near present-day Rummel in Paint Township.

Three of their children died young. In September 1870, their 1-year-old daughter Sarah Ann died, and the following month their 3-year-old son Daniel died. Their daughter Jessa died in December 1878 at the age of 8.

All seven of their adult children remained near their parents' homestead.

Hiram died on October 20, 1900 at the age of 60.

In 1903 their daughter Susanna Maloney died at about the age of 28, and the following year Kate died at about the age of 31.

Rebecca outlived Hiram by 26 years. She died at the advanced age of 88 on March 18, 1927 at their home.

Hiram and Rebecca are buried on the Barnes Homestead near Rummel, Paint Township.
