Hugh William Sparks (1870 - 1938)
Hugh William Sparks was born on April 28, 1870 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the son of William and Catherine (Barnes) Sparks. Hugh's father was a Civil War veteran.
Hugh was an only child. When he was a young boy, his family moved to Portage, Cambria County. He grew up in Portage near his grandparents Tobias and Elizabeth Barnes, and his mother's two sisters, Joanna and Barbara and their families.
Hugh married Agnes Melhorn. They had three daughters: Kathryn (Sparks) Farren, Mary Josephine (Sparks) Cicotello, and Zeda (Sparks) Quinn.
Hugh was a coal miner. He was employed for many years by the Forge Coal Company.
Hugh died on April 18, 1938 at Memorial Hospital, Johnstown after suffering a heart attack following an operation. He was 68. He was survied by Agnes and their three daughters.
Hugh is buried beside his parents in Wilmore United Brethren Cemetery, Wilmore, Summerhill Township, Cambria County, PA.
Kathryn married John Farren. They were the parents of five children. Kathryn died in 1975 at the age of 69. Mary married Guy Paul Cicotello. They had two children. Mary was well educated. She received a BA in history from University of Pittsburgh in 1931 and an M.S. in library science from Clarion State University in 1965. She worked as a teacher and librarian for the Portage, PA public school district. Mary died in 1984 at the age of 77.
Zeda married John J. Quinn in 1937. They were the parents of three daughters. Zeda was a charter member of the Portage Historical Society, in Portage, PA. Zeda died in 1997 at the age of 83. |
