Sarah Catherine "Kate" (Brandt) Conrad (1881 - 1942)
Sarah Catherine Brandt was born on September 13, 1881 near Patton in Chest Township, the daughter of Daniel Demetrius and Sarah Ellen (Krise) Brand. She was baptized on October 11th at St. Augustine Catholic Church in St. Augustine, Clearfield Township; her godparents were Thomas Dunphy and Mary Wilt.
Kate was the seventh of nine children, and she grew up in Dean Township. Her parents both came from large families, so Kate had numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
On October 28, 1902 Kate married Charles Conrad at St. Augustine Catholic Church in St. Augustine. Charles was born January 1879 in Cambria County. (He may have been the son of Albert James and Julia Annie (Risban) Conrad, but further research is needed to confirm this.)
Kate may have met Charles through her sister Della, for in 1900 he was boarding in their home in Dean Township. Kate's sister Della and brother Albert had married siblings, Walter and Susan Conrad, but Charles was not related to them. When Kate's sister Jennie married Walter and Susan's brother Ray Conrad, four Brandts were married to Conrads.
Charles was Protestant, and Kate was Catholic. His family cut off contact with him because he married a Catholic girl. After his death, his children only had contact with an aunt, who was also disinherited, but for a different reason: she married a man of poor economic standing
Kate and Charles had eight children: Josephine Mary (Conrad) Gutwald, John Charles Conrad, Carl Joseph Conrad, Daniel Thomas Conrad, Mary Catherine (Conrad) Plazek, Sarah Ellen "Nellie" (Conrad) Wheeler, Florence May (Conrad) Jones, and Mildred Mary (Conrad) Johnson.
The Conrads settled in Clearfield Township, Cambria County. Charles was employed as a coalminer.
On March 6, 1924 Charles died of an apparent heart attack. He was just 45.
After Charle's death, Kate moved to Sankertown in Cambria County, which is where her sister Jennie resided.
On July 28, 1942 Kate died at her home in Sankertown from cancer. She was 60.
Josephine's son Harold moved to Weirton, West Virginia where he obtained employment with Weirton Steel Company. His uncles Carl and Daniel Conrad, Kermit Jones, and William Johnson all followed him to Weirton and found employment with Weirton Steel.
