Charles Henry Brandt (1886 - 1958)

Charles Henry Brandt was born on June 17, 1886 in Dean Township, the son of Daniel Demetrius and Sarah Ellen (Krise) Brand. He was baptized on  July 11th at St. Augustine Catholic Church in St. Augustine, Clearfield Township; his godparents were Samuel Lilly and Amelia Delozier.

Charlie was the youngest of nine children, and he grew up in Dean Township.  His parents both came from large families, and Charles had numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

As a young man, Charlie was a coalminer like his older brothers.

On December 25, 1908 Charlie married Agnes C. McDonald, perhaps in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland. On February 22, 1909 they were remarried in Frugality, Reade Township, presumably in a church service.

Agnes was born in November 1891 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Milton R. and Amanda Mary McDonald.

Charlie and Agnes were the parents of six children-five sons and one daughter: Daniel J. Brandt, Albert "Dutch" Brandt, Mary Catherine "Marie" (Brandt) Young, John Henry Brandt, Milton Brandt, and William Joseph "Bill" Brandt.

Charlie and Agnes named their first child Daniel after his father. Charlie's brother Frank had named his first born Daniel as well, so there were two Daniel Brandts in the family.

Their second child was named Albert. Both Charlie and Agnes brothers named Albert. Charlie's brother Albert died in 1910 at the young age of 35.

Their son Milton was named after his grandfather.

On December 18, 1918, Agnes died four days after giving birth to Bill. She was just 27-years old. [Note: There is speculation that Charlie had physically abused Agnes and indirectly or directly contributed to her death.]

In 1920, Charlie resided in Reade Township with his two oldest sons, Daniel and Albert. Milton and Leslie (nicknamed Leslie) resided with their grandparents Milton and Amanda McDonald in nearby Juniata, Blair County. His daughter Marie was residing with his sister-in-law Luella (McDonald) Buchanan in Juniata. It is not known with whom his son John resided. By 1930 his five children were living with their father iin Reade Township.

Charlie was a lifelong coalminer. According to his granddaughter, Gerta, he was very much a man of the country. He did not drive a car and preferred to stay home with his dog. When he and his sons got together, they did a fair amount of drinking.

Dutch died in 1951 at the age of 40.

While Charlie stayed in Cambria County, his surviving children all moved East. In 1958 Daniel, William, and Marie resided in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, PA. Milton and John both resided in Frederick County, Maryland.

Charlie died on November 27, 1958 near Ashville, Cambria County. He was 72.

Charlie and Agnes are buried at St. Augustine Cemetery, St. Augustine, Cambria County.
