Mary Josephine Brandt (1856 - 1947)

Mary Josephine Brandt was born on November 22, 1856 in Clearfield Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Augustine John and Philomena (Martin) Brand. She was baptized two days later at St. Augustine Catholic Church in St. Augustine where her father was a founding member; her godmother was Maria Roofner (this is probably a misspelling.)

Mary was the oldest of eleven children born to her parents, four of whom died young. Her father was 25 years older than her mother, who was his second wife. Mary had five older half-siblings.
In 1880 Mary resided with her parents near Patton in Clearfield Township.

It is thought that Mary gave birth to a child out of wedlock who was raised by her parents.
Louis Brandt may have been born in 1883 or in 1886. He may also be the Aloysius McMullen who appeared on the 1800 US Census as a two-year-old grandson to Augustine and Philomena. If so, this would put his birth date at about 1878. Louis died on August 18, 1963. He had no children.

On November 24, 1891, at the age of 35, Mary married J. Matthew Glass at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Carrolltown, Cambria County.

Mary and Matthew had one child, who she named John Augustine Glass, after her father. Gust, as he was known, was born on June 8, 1895.

It is believed that Matthew died in 1918 at about the age of 62.

Mary died on December 20, 1947 in Cambria Township, Cambria County. She is buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Gust married Stella E. Chapman in 1916. Together, they raised 8 children. Their son John Augustine Jr. died at Normandy, France during World War II. Gust died on August 16, 1963 in Johnstown, Cambria County at the age of 68. His wife Stella lived to the age of 98.

Note: Mary was born in 1956, not 1948 as the obituary above states.
