Henry William "Harry" Brand (1872 - 1959)


Henry William Brand was born on October 2, 1872 in Clearfield Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the son of Augustine John and Philomena (Martin) Brand. He was baptized on October 13th at St. Augustine Catholic Church in St. Augustine where his father was a founding member; his godparents were Daniel and Mary Delozier.

Harry was the ninth of eleven children born to her parents, four of whom died young. His father was 25 years older than his mother, who was his second wife. Harry also had five older half-siblings.

Harry was his mother's ninth child and the first to survive early childhood since Edward, who was ten years older.

Harry was a coal miner.

On September 11, 1900 Harry married Mary Ellen Sophia Weakland in Patton, Clearfield Township. She was born on February 14, 1874 in Elder, Carroll Township, Cambria County, the daugher of Anselm and Matilda (Luther) Weakland.

Harry and Mary Ellen were the parents of three children: Harry Brandt, Vera M. Brandt, and Leonard Michael Brandt.

Mary Ellen died on June 14, 1914 at the age of 40.

In 1920 Harry resided in Patton, Clearfield Township with his son Leonard and daughter Vera and with his widow's sisters, Emma and Melvina, who helped him raise his children.

Harry's son Harry Jr. married and had 1 son, Edward Michael Brandt.

His daughter Vera never married, and his son Leonard's fate is unknown.

Harry outlived Mary Ellen by 45 years. He moved to Ohio where his son Harry and daughter Vera resided.

He died on February 26, 1959 in Akron, Summit County, Ohio. He was 86.

Harry and Mary Ellen are buried in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Patton, Clearfield Township, Cambria County, PA.
