William John Leonard Krise (1850 - 1912)
William John Leonard Krise was born on May 19, 1850 near St. Augustine, Clearfield Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the son of John and Sarah (Litzinger) Krise.
William was the youngest of her parents' ten children and the last of his father's fifteen children. His mother was his father's second wife, and she was twenty years his junior. His father was at least 65 when William was born.
William grew up on a farm in Clearfield Township; his father was a farmer. His parents were founding members of St. Augustine Catholic Church. His uncle Henry Krise donated the land where the new church was built. William may have been the only Krise child baptized at St. Augustine.
William had a number nieces and nephews who were older than him, and many more were born while he was growing up.
The Krise family proudly served their country during the Civil War, but with tragic results. William's older brothers, Henry, Stephen, Daniel, and Thomas, and brothers-in-law, Joshua Cretin and Daniel Brand, all fought for the Pennsylvania volunteer infantry. Joshua Cretin, husband of Matilda, died at Antietam, Maryland in 1862, and his brother Daniel died in 1864. Henry returned home, but it is thought that he died just two years later from injuries or illness sustained during the War. William also had a nephew, William Ryan, who died in the War.
On February 5, 1872 his father John died at his home. He lived a long life and was about 86 years old.
His sister Jane died sometime in the 1870s.
William never married. He resided for many years with his widowed mother and unmarried sister Rebecca in Clearfield Township.
William died on September 21, 1912. He is buried at St. Augustine Cemetery, St. Augustine, Clearfield Township.
