Stephen James "Steve" Krise (1836 - 1909)

Stephen James Krise was born on January 17, 1836 in Clearfield Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the son of John and Sarah (Litzinger) Krise.

Steve was the fourth of his parents' ten children. His mother was his father's second wife, and she was twenty years his junior. Steve had five older half-siblings.

Steve grew up on a farm in Clearfield Township; his father was a farmer. His parents were founding members of St. Augustine Catholic Church. His uncle Henry Krise donated the land where the new church was built.

In 1860 Steve and his brother Henry resided in Carroll Township on the farm of  Samuel Stiles, a cooper, farmer, and native of the state of Maine, where they were employed by Mr. Stiles as coopers.

The Krise family proudly served their country during the Civil War, but with tragic results. Steve, his brothers, Henry, Daniel, and Thomas; his brothers-in-law, Joshua Cretin and Daniel Brand; and his nephews William Ryan and John Albert Nagle all fought for the Pennsylvania volunteers. Joshua Cretin, husband of Matilda, died at Antietam, Maryland in 1862; William died in 1863; and his brother Daniel died in 1864. Henry returned home from the War, but it is thought that he died just two years later from injuries or illness sustained during the War.

Steve was a member of Company K, 3rd regiment.

On September 23, 1862 Steve married Mary Jane Inlow at St. Augustine Church. Mary Jane was born about 1843 in Clearfield Township, the daughter of Joshua and Sara J. (Murphy) Inlow.

Steve and Mary Jane were the parents of about ten children: Ida V. Krise, Andrew Ulysses Grant Krise, Lawrence "Lorenzo" Ferdinand Krise, Louis Jesse Krise, Adam Isaac "Asa?" Krise, Mary Frances (Krise) Thatcher, Anna G. (Krise) Grimme, Estella L. (Krise) Campbell, Mary Krise, and Catherine Krise. Mary and Catherine both died in infancy.

Steve was a blacksmith. He and his family moved from Clearfield Township to Altoona, Blair County sometime during the 1870s. It is presumed he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad at their Altoona shops.

In 1884 their son Andrew married Anna Mary Brand. Steve's sister Ellen was married to Anna's uncle Daniel Brand. Andrew and Anna were the parents of 11 adult children. They raised their children near Pittsburgh in Allegheny County. Andrew worked as a machiniist at a steel mill.

Sadly, Mary Jane died in 1885 at their home in Altoona at about the age of 42.

Tragically, Lorenzo died in 1887 at the age of 18, and Adam Isaac died in 1892 at about the age of 19. The nature of their deaths is not known.

Frances married John Louis Thatcher about 1897. They removed to Los Angeles, California. They were the parents of at least two children.

Anna married Joseph Grimme in 1899. They raised two daughters, Leona and Adelaide in Altoona. Their daughter Leona became a Catholic nun and took the name Sister M. Melissa.

Estella married Anthony Clayton "CJ" Campbell in 1902. They remained in Altoona where they raised six children.

Steve died on December 2, 1909 at the home of his daughter Estella Campbell in Altoona. He was 73.

Steve and Mary Jane are buried at St. John's Cemetery in Altoona.
