Catherine Ann (Krise) Ryan (1816 - 1881)
Catherine Ann Krise was born on September 15, 1816 in Allegheny Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of John and Mary Krise.
Catherine was baptized at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Loretto by Father Demetrius A. Gallitzin. She was her parents' first child.
On May 21, 1826 Catherine's mother, Mary, died, leaving her father to take care of five young children. Her brother John A. was less than one year old.
In 1829 her father remarried to Sarah Litzinger, who was twenty years his junior. Sarah provided Catherine with ten half-brothers and sisters. They raised their family on a farm in northern Allegheny Township, which became the newly formed Clearfield Township of northern Cambria County.
On November 6, 1838 Catherine married David Ryan at St. Michael's Catholic Church. David was born on August 20, 1815 in Allegheny Township, Cambria County, the son of William and Mary (Platt) Ryan.
Catherine and David were the parents of eleven children, eight of whom died early deaths. There children were the following: William H. Ryan, Mary Ryan, Anastasia Ryan, Margaret Ryan, John Ryan, Susanna Ryan, Eleanor "Helen" Ryan, Angeline Ryan, Thomas Ryan, Silas A. Ryan, and David C. Ryan.
In 1840 Catherine and David resided in Allegheny Township, and in 1850 they resided in Carroll Township.
Sadly, in February and June 1845, their infant daughters Anastasia and Susanna died. It is believed that Anastasia was the first person buried in the church graveyard of the new St. Augustine Catholic Church in St. Augustine, Clearfield Township where she and David and much of her family were foundings members.
Tragedy struck again in November 1847 when their infant daughter Margaret died. in the summer of 1852 they lost another two infant daughtesr, Helen and Angeline.
Soon after the Civil War broke out, Catherine's oldest son William joined the Pennsylvania volunteer infantry along with three of her half-brothers, a nephew, and two brothers-in-law.
On May 9, 1863 their 15-year-old son John died. Later that year they found out that William died while in uniform on September 10, 1863. He was just 23 years old.
In 1870 Catherine and David resided in Clearifled Township on a farm neighboring her aged father. Their two youngest children, David and Silas resided with them. Their son Thomas is presumed to have died, which leaves only Mary's fate unaccounted for.
In 1872 Catherine's father died at the advanced age of about 86.
In 1880 their sons David and still Silas resied with them along with Silas's wife of less than one year, Mary Anne Nagle Krise. Silas and Mary were eventually the parents of six children.
On March 20, 1881 Catherine died at her home in Clearifled Township at the age of 64. Her death ended a marriage of 42 years.
David died on April 6, 1897 at the age of 81. Catherine and David are buried at St. Augustine Cemetery in St. Augustine.
