Abraham J. Corle (1818 - 1884)
Abraham J. Corle was born on Marsh 11, 1818 in St. Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvanina, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Bowser) Corle Sr. Abraham grew up on a farm, the fifth of seven children. His parents were among the earliest settlers of the newly formed Union Township, where he grew up.
Abraham was a farmer and a tailor. He was a bachelor until the age of 31.
On October 16, 1849 Abraham married Rachel C. Shull, whose sister Sophia was the wife of his brother Fred. Rachel was born on September 20, 1828 the daughter of Jacob and Polly (Russell) Shull. Abraham was 31, and Rachel was just 20.
Abraham and Rachel were the parents of twelve children: Jacob Corle, Austin Corle, Mary Jane (Corle) Beegle, Sylvester Shull Corle, Margaret Elmira (Corle) Smith, Joseph Henry Corle, Clara Etta Corle, Augustus Corle, Edward Heilman Corle, Frederick Albert Corle, and twins Albert and Ada Corle. Abraham and Rachel raised their children in St. Clair Township, Bedford County. Of their twelve children, only six survived to adulthood.
Clara and Augustus both died in infancy in 1863 and 1864. In the summer of 1873 Fred died at the age of 4, and Ada died at the age of 3. It is wondered if they caught a contagious illness. Tragedy struck once more in the winter of 1869. Their oldest sons, Jacob, and Austin, aged 17 and 16, respectively, died. Their causes of death are not known either. Their son Joseph died on May 24, 1883. He was only 22.
Margaret married William Smith, a lawyer. Margaret and William had 9 children and resided. In 1880 they resided in Bedford Borough. Her brother Edmund resided with them. In 1900 they resided in nearby Everett. By 1910 Margaret was widowed and had removed to Billings, Yellowstone County, Montana. It is not known if William accompanied them, or if he died prior to their moving West. Montana resided in Billings in 1910 with her eldest son Thaddeus, a lawyer, and her three youngest daughters.
Edmund also removed to Montana. It is thought that he married a woman named Iola. He may have died in 1940 and Iola in 1947, with both being buried in Mountainview Cemetery, Billings, Yellowstone County, Montana.
Abraham died on January 23, 1884 at the age of 64. Rachel outlived Abraham by 27 years, passing away on October 5, 1911 at the age of 83.
