Sophia (Shrader) Hammer (ca. 1828 - ca. 1855)

Sophia was born on or about 1828 in St. Clair Township, Bedford County, PA, the youngest child of Philip and Anna (Smith) Shrader.

About 1847 Sophia married John Abraham Hammer in St. Clair Township. John was born on or about May 17, 1825 in Napier Township, Bedford County, PA, the son of Michael Francis and Anna (Sleek) Hammer.

Sophia gave birth to these five children: William W. Hammer, Philip Shrader Hammer, Abraham Bunn Shrader, Ann Elizabeth (Shrader) Cook, and Sophia Emma (Shrader) Brown.

Sophia's daughter Sophia Emma was born on January 31, 1855. Sadly, Sophia died shortly thereafter. She may have died in childbirth. She was not yet 30.

On January 13, 1856 John remarried to Sophia’s niece, Elizabeth Anders, who was 22 years of age. They were married in Altoona, Blair County, PA. Nine months later, Elizabeth gave birth to a son. They had five children together: Jacob "Jake" Hammer, John Calvin "Cal" Hammer, Catherine "Kate" Hammer, William Alva "Bill" Hammer, and Francis Marion "Frank" Hammer.

Although John remarried quickly, his three children by Sophia were not raised by Elizabeth, but rather by Sophia's brother Solomon and ____.

Since only Abraham, Ann, and Sophia were mentioned in their grandfather Philip Shrader’s will of 1860, it is presumed that William and Philip both died young.

In 1860 John and Elizabeth resided in Richland Township, Cambria County, PA, where John was a shoemaker. Their two youngest children, Jacob and John resided with them. Shortly thereafter, they relocated to Indiana. By 1866 John and Elizabeth resided in Windsor, Randolph County when son Wiliam Alva was born.

In 1870 Sophia Emma resided with her uncle Solomon Shrader . It is not known where Abraham or Anna Elizabeth resided.

On June 21, 1871, Elizabeth's mother Catherine died at the age of 62.

About 1875 Sophia Emma married Jacob Brown presumably in Bedford County, PA . He was born on or about October 5, 1853. They had four children: Millie Amanda (Brown), Clara Missouri (Brown), Russell Piris Brown, and Roy William Brown.

Elizabeth died on December 6, 1921.

In 1921 Anna (Hammer) Cook resided in Cleveland, Ohio.

Sophia Emma Brown died on November 7, 1927. She is buried in Pleasantville, Cemetery, Pleasantville, Bedford County, PA. Her husband Jacob died on January 24, 1930. (This needs to be verified)
