Samuel Curl (ca. 1799/1800 - ca. 1858)

Samuel Curl was born about December 20, 1799/1800 in (probably Franklin County) Pennsylvania, the son of Leonard Corle and Martha.

Samuel used the spelling "Curl" rather than "Corle" or "Corl" spellings used by his brothers.

Sometime between 1790 and 1810 Leonard moved his family to Greenfield Twp, Blair County (formerly Bedford County) as Leonard appears for the first time living in Greenfield Twp in 1810 and appears in the 1790 census in Franklin County. We have not been able to find an 1800 census record for Leonard as yet. At some point between 1810 and 1814, Leonard’s first wife, Martha, died. We know this from the Orphan Courts records because on April 6th 1814, Franny, Samuel and Adam, all children of Leonard and Martha, had to apply to the Orphans Court to have their Father, Leonard, appointed as guardian of their estates. This means that their Mother had had some sort of money or estate left to each of her children. None of the three children mentioned had attained the age of 14 at the time which meant they had to have a guardian for their estates. Samuel would soon turn aged 14 in December of that year, but at this point he would have been 13 years old. Samuel’s first appearance in the tax lists is 1820 in Greenfield Twp as a single freeman and he would have been aged 21 or apparently nearly so. The amount he was taxed was nothing. His Father, Leonard and brother Joseph, are living there as well.

Samuel married Barbara Burket about 1820-1821. The Burket family had a large estate in Greenfield Twp we know from maps where their homes were listed and tax lists. They had the following children: Jacob Corle, male Corle, Mathias Curl, Caroline Curl, and Sara Ann Curl.

Samuel appears in the 1823 tax list for Greenfield Twp as a married man. Samuel married Barbara Burket sometime between 1820 and 1823. he value of Samuel’s estate in 1823 again was not large. The next appearance we know from records is 1824, Samuel appears in St. Clair Twp tax list. Again his estate was not large. In 1826 Samuel appears in the St. Clair Twp tax lists with Leonard, John, Jacob, and Adam. Samuel’s estate had grown some in value, but not as large as his Father’s or older brothers Jacob and John. In 1829 tax lists, Samuel is still in St. Clair Twp along with Leonard, his brothers and nephews. The valuation was not large. In 1832, Samuel appears still in St. Clair Twp tax lists, with a larger valuation. He also appears in the census records for 1830 in St. Clair. In the 1840 census, Samuel appears in Greenfield Twp again. Whether this was because Greenfield and St. Clair Twp’s had once been the same place, or whether Samuel physically moved, we don’t know. We do know that Union Twp was formed from parts of Greenfield and St. Clair Twps. So it is possible that Samuel hadn’t moved but that the place where he was living was renamed.

The next time we find Samuel is in the 1850 census and he is living in North Woodberry, Taylor Twp, Blair County (formerly Bedford County until 1846). Living with him was Barbara his wife, Mathias and Caroline and two young children, Sarah Dickey and John Sheath, whose relationship to Samuel and Barbara is unknown. From land grant records we know that Barbara Burket Curl, Samuel’s wife, obtained from Samuel Burket land in Union Twp on March 31,1849. Again, we do not know if this part of Union had been North Woodberry or not, however, Woodberry Twp was part of Union Twp.

The next record we can find for Samuel and his wife are their tombstones and the recorded date for Samuel’s death is 12th December 1858. Barbara, his wife, was born on the May 27, 1802 and died on June 6, 1852. They are buried together, along with a daughter, Sarah Ann, in Rodman Cemetery, Blair County. Rodman had formerly been the town in which a furnace was located called Maria Forges.

Son Jacob resided in Blair County for many years. He married Nancy Ayers and together they eight children: Sarah E. Corle (died in infancy), Samuel Corle, Annie Mary (Corle) Bowers, Jacob Corle, Jane Corle, Laura (Corle) Sellers, George Corle, and Scott W. Corle. Jacob was for many years employed by the Hollidaysburg and Gap Iron Company as a waggoner, in which he hauled limestone and fossil ore for the furnaces there.

There had been a Methodist Church in Maria Forges established there in the 1830’s and this is where Mathias married Lavenne on April 20, 1853. This is also where Mathias two eldest children, Sarah and John, were born. Mathias was born on September 25,1827 and died on August 3, 1882. Mathias and Lavenned moved to Brookville, Ogle County, Illinois with her family. They traveled by covered wagon in 1857 having first settled in Carroll County, Illinois and this was where their third child, Samuel (Jr) was born. He was born Aug. 15, 1857 in Lima Twp, Carroll County, Ill. Mathias wife, Lavenne, died on September 16, 1859 while giving birth to their fourth child George and baby George died one month later. Both of them are buried together in the Brookville Methodist Church. When Lavenne died, Mathias made the decision to move back to Pennsylvania. He settled in Freedom Twp, Blair County and specifically in Roaring Spring having obtained a house at 73 Locust Street, Roaring Spring. When he moved back, he took with him his second child, John and left his eldest child Sarah and toddler son Samuel behind in Illinois. Mathias remarried in Roaring Springs a woman named Hannah, (surname unknown) and they had several other children. Mathias’ son John remained living with his Father and Hannah it seems from the census records for 1870 and 1880 and John died in January 1883. Sarah and Samuel were raised by the William McIlnay family in Ill. In February 24, 1876 in Polo, Ogle County, Illinois, Sarah married John Watson. They did not have any children. Sarah lived to the ripe old age of 93. Samuel, who spelled his last name "Currell", married Mary Elizabeth Harris. They had these four sons: Lewis Currell, Bert Currell, Wayne Currell, and Donald Currell.

By Suzanne (Currell) Barshall, a descendant of Samuel and Barbara through their son Mathias and his wife Lavenne.
