Solomon Adams (1813 - 1896)

Ann Shrader (ca. 1817 - 1906)

Solomon Adams was born on March 15, 1813 in St. Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the son of William Adams. His mother’s name is not known. He was the grandson of Robert Adams, a pioneer white settler of Bedford County. (1)

Ann "Nancy" Shrader was born about July 16, 1817 in St. Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Philip and Anna (Smith) Shrader. Philip was born and raised in Maryland, and Anna in New Jersey.

In 1820 Solomon and his family resided in Bedford Borough. In 1830 they resided in Napier Township. It is thought that two brothers and two sisters died young. It is presumed that Solomon and Ann attended church together.

About 1836 Solomon and Ann were married. By 1840, they lived on a farm next to her parents in St. Clair Township. (2)

Solomon and Ann were the parents of eleven children. They were: William Adams, Catherine A. “Kate” (Adams) Wills, George Washington Adams, Philip Adams, John Quincy Adams, Henry C. Adams, Alexander Thomas Adams, Margaret (Adams) Gordon, Daniel P. Adams, David I. Adams, and Samuel Adams.

Their two youngest children, David and Samuel died young: Samuel in 1865 at about the age of 2, and David in 1871 at age 13.

During the Civil War, sons William, George, and Philip fought for the Union Army. Sadly, Philip died around June 19, 1865. He is thought be buried in a Civil War Soldier’s Cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland.

Solomon and Ann lived their entire married life--about 60 years--in the vicinitiy of the village of Ryot in West St. Clair Township. (3)

They belonged to the United Brethren Church in Fishertown.

In addition to being a life-life farmer, Solomon was a justice of the peace for several years.

Solomon died at home on January 19, 1896 at the age of 82. (4) He and Ann had been married for about 60 years. The Bedford Inquirer noted that he was "a considerate father and and a kind and loving husband." In addition, he was also "a good neighbor, he always had a kind word and a pleasant smile for every one he met."
