Harold Grover "Harry" Adams (1884 - 1963) Harold Grover "Harry" Adams was born on July 8, 1884 in Saxton, Liberty Township, Bedford County, the son of Alexander Thomas Adams and Elizabeth Bunn (Feaster) Adams. Harry was the sixth of eight children, seven boys and one girl. He grew up in Saxton. His father was a carpenter.
Harry, like his four older brothers, learned the carpentry trade from their father. On July 26, 1905 Harry married Mary Luella "Lula" Hamilton in Saxton. She was born on October 13, 1882 in Saxton, the daughter of William Leopold and Barbara Ann (Berkstresser) Hamilton. That year his parents moved to Wheeling, West Virginia, but Harry and Lula remained in Saxton. Harry and Lula had the following four children: William Arthur Adams, Ernest A. Adams, Regna Lula (Adams) Butler, and Anne Elizabeth (Adams) Taylor. It is thought that all four of their children were born in Saxton, and that they moved to Fredericktown, Knox County, Ohio shortly after Anne Elizabeth's birth in 1918. In Fredericktown, Harry utilized his carpentry skills as a (furniture maker for Sun Glow Manufacturing Company. For a time he served as president and business agent of the Furniture Workers union. On April 26, 1955, Lula died at the home of their daughter Anne Elizabeth in Mt. Vernon, Knox County. She was 72.
Shortly before his death, Harry shared genealogical information with his son Arthur about his Adams forebears. Unfortunately, he knew little about his grandparents, Solomon and Ann. However, he held an obituary of his grandmother, which helped this researcher reconnect their large family. Harry died on December 28, 1962 at McConnell Nursing Home in Fredericktown after suffering a stroke. He was 78. Harry and Lula are buried in Forest Cemetery, Fredericktown, Wayne Twp, Knox County, Ohio. They were members of the Presbyterian Church. Their son Arthur was a third generation carpenter as well as a cabinet maker. |
