David Paul Adams (1894-1971)
David Paul Adams was born on May 23, 1894 in Saxton, Liberty Township, Bedford County, the son of Alexander Thomas Adams and Elizabeth Bunn (Feaster) Adams.
David was the youngest of eight children, seven boys and one girl. He was the baby. His older brotherrs Ed, Art, and Norm were 22, 20, and 19 when he was born.
David like five of his six older brothers, learned the carpentry trade from their father. When David was 6 years old, his 20-year-old brother Ernest died. At the age of ten, the family left Saxton and moved to Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia and then to nearby McMechen, Union Twp, Marshall County, West Virginia. On May 11, 1913 David married Jeannette Sprout in Benwood, Marshall County. She was born on November 3, 1895, in Sistersville, Tyler County, West Virginia, the daughter of Clark and Lula (Wright) Sprouts. David and Jeannette had the following four children: Gaylor David Adams, Bernadine Jeannette Garrison, Clark Walter Adams, and Elizabeth Lula Hull. David and Jeannette raised their children near McMechen, Union Township, Marshall County. In 1945 they purchased a farm in Benwood, Marshall County. David was a carpenter with the Wheeling Bronze and Casting Company. He was also a millrite. David had a camp named White Rock on the Big Wheeling Creek. It washed away when the creek flooded one year.
Their son Gaylord enlisted with the US Navy during World War Two, where he saw action as an aviation machinist's mate. Tragically, he died at sea in 1944 when when a bad thunderstorm caused the blimp he was traveling on to go down somewhere over the Gulf of Mexico, killing every man on board. He was only 29 and unmarried.
David died on September 13, 1971 at his home in Benwood from lung cancer. He was 78. Jeannette owned and operated Jeannette Beauty Shop in Benwood. She lived a long life and died on April 11, 1995 at Moundview Nursing hom in Moundsville, Marshall County at the age of 99. David and Jeannette are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia.
David was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, while Jeannette was a member of the First Christian Church. David and Jeannette had 10 grandchildren. |
