Sarah Catherine (Adams) Clites (1870 - 1949) Sarah Catherine Clites was born on April 22, 1870 in Hopewell Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of John Quincy and Delilah (Sparks) Adams.
Sarah's father was a carpenter. By 1880 they had moved to Huntingdon, Huntingdon County in 1880, but that move was temporary. In the 1884, they moved to Coopersdale, a borough of Johnstown in Cambria County. In 1889 they witnessed the tragedy that became known as the Great Johnstown Flood.
On June 28, 1888 Sarah Catherine married Daniel Clites in Coopersdale. Daniel was born on June 24, 1869 in Summerhill Township, Cambria County, the son of Andrew Jackson and Sophia (King) Clites. At the time of their marriage, Daniel worked for the railroad. Sarah and Daniel were the parents of ten children. They were: Harry Ernest Clites, John Andreew Clites, Delilah May (Clites) Miller- Hershberger, Sebert Samuel Clites, Bertha Jane (Clites) Horwath, James Earl Clites Sr., Theodore Andrewe "Ted" Clites, Edgar Lewis Clites, Charles William Clites, and Florence (Clites) Dreikorn. Their son Ted died of pneumonia in 1928 at the age of 20. Daniel worked for many years as an employee of the Johnstown Water Company and in charge of the Morrellville storage yard. On January 27, 1939 Daniel suffered a stroke and died at their home. Sarah died on October 24, 1949 in Johnstown. She was 79. Four of her sons preceded her in death. Sarah and Daniel are buried in Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown. |
