Adamine B. "Addie" (Gordon) Makin (ca. 1874 - 1925)
Adamine B. Gordon was born about 1874 in Ryot (Oak Shade or Six Roads), West St. Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Lorenzo Madden and Margaret (Adams) Gordon. Addie was the third of eleven children and the oldest girl.
Addie grew up on a farm near her grandparents and many cousins and family members. In 1881 her grandfather Jeremiah Gordon died, and in the early 1880s the Gordons moved to Johnstown, Cambria County. On July 23, 1892 18-year-old Addie gave birth to a boy out of wedlock whom she named Harold McMullen. His father's name is not known.
Sadly, on February 1, 1893 Addie's baby brother Daniel died at the age of 3.
On the Fourth of July in 1893, Addie married Joseph L. Makin in Johnstown. Joseph was born about September 1868 in Pennsylvania, the son of Oliver and Sydney Ann (unknown) Makin.
Joseph adopted Harold, and together, Addie and Joseph had the following seven children: Edna Makin, Minnie Makin Ethel Makin, Russell Makin, Margaret Makin, Henry Makin, and Merritt S. Makin. In 1896 her parents and many of her brothers and sisters moved to Streetsboro, Portage County, Ohio. Addie and Joseph continued to make their home in Johnstown where Joseph was employed as a fireman.
Sadly, her son Henry died on March 3, 1896 in Johnstown at the age of 3. The cause of death was "brain trouble."
About 1912 they moved their family to Lima City, Ottawa Township, Allen County, Ohio. Joseph found employment at a steel factory there.
Addie died on October 9, 1925 in Allen County. She was about 51.
