Agnes Mary (Conrad) Skelly (1833 - 1899)
Agnes Mary Conrad was born in 1833 either in Conewago Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, or in Allegheny Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania the daughter of John George and Mary Ellen (Small) Conrad. Either shortly before or after her birth, her family travelled by covered wagon to the Catholic settlement near St. Michael's Church in Allegheny Township, Cambria County in Western Pennsylvania, a trip of over 150 miles.
Agnes had three older brothers and two younger sisters. Agnes's father was a shoemaker and a farmer.
Agnes grew up near Loretto in Allegheny Township. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Loretto.
On September 15, 1853 Agnes married Daniel Augustine Skelly at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Wilmore, Cambria County. Daniel was born on December 12, 1828 in Cambria County, the son of John and Elizabeth (McGough) Skelly, who were early members of St. Michael's Church in Loretto.
It is thought that John Skelly was the nephew of Felix Skelly, who fought in the American Revolution. Felix died on July 3, 1835 and is buried in St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Cemetery in Wilmore, Cambria County, Pa. It is said that Felix had two brothers who were killed by Indians. It is also said that Felix and his brothers were Scots-Irish immigrants from County Antrim, Northern Ireland who first settled near Antietam, Maryland than later removed to Tuckahoe Valley in what is now Blair County, Pa, before settling near Loretto.
Agnes and Daniel were the parents of five children: Simon Skelly, Henrietta "Nettie" Skelly, Sarah Eleanor "Ella" (Skelly) Emigh/Ameigh, Catherine C. Skelly, and James Henry Skelly.
They raised their children on a farm near Wilmore.
On December 16, 1899 Agnes died at their home. She was 66. Daniel died the following year at the age of about 71. They are buried in St. Bartholomew's Cemetery, Wilmore.
